Associate Manager, Chemistry and Formulation - North America Home Fragrance (Finance)

ABOUT THE ROLE

SC Johnson has an opportunity for an experienced chemist/formulator to join the North America Home Fragrance team.

As Associate Manager, you will play a pivotal role in New Product Development across our Candles platform for our Home Fragrance business. You will formulate and develop new products, troubleshoot issues, support line extensions, develop new methodologies, and assist with technological advancements which result in consumer preferred benefits and strengthen our intellectual property portfolio in this space. You will participate in cross-functional teams, work independently, and become a leader and go-to subject matter expert within the formulation community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and validate innovative Candles formulations utilizing design of experiments, statistical analysis and unique methods of analysis, both qualitative and quantitative, to measure various performance attributes and characteristics of Candles products and formulas.
  • Understand the intellectual property landscape of the North America Home Fragrance business and recommend strategies to meet market needs while generating SCJ owned IP and avoiding competitive patents.
  • Use sound, scientific experimentation practices and creative problem-solving to support the testing and development of Candles product claims and appropriate documentation through analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Develop and communicate technical conclusions and recommendations to influence development teams and management.
  • Meet internal ingredient standards and industry best practices for safety, scientific significance, accuracy, and recordkeeping.
  • Adhere to and communicate project milestones and launch time deadlines.
  • Optimize formulation ingredients to manage cost and availability of ingredients.
  • Monitor stability testing, including first production run stabilities, and maintain records thoroughly.
  • Prepare samples and track documentation for stability, micro-challenge, toxicological, clinical, and performance testing. Coordinate outside testing with appropriate resources as required
  • Meet with chemical suppliers to be aware of new raw materials and the possible second-sourcing of raw materials to meet cost objectives.
  • Review trade publications and other industry news sources for raw material information, regulatory updates, and educational opportunities.
  • Investigate new raw materials and technologies through laboratory experimentation, record findings, and suggest applications.
  • Prepare and/or coordinate preparation of demos and sales samples as needed for sell in, photography, trade shows, etc.
  • Input data requirements in SAP with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Be present for pilot batching and first production runs as necessary, while working closely with cross functional team members to ensure quality scale up of laboratory formulas to pilot plant and full production.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follow general lab safety guidelines and maintain a clean, orderly work area
  • Support sales team with customer questions, demos and product performance materials.
  • Work as a member of a fast-paced project team to create new products or product improvements that address consumer user criteria, needs, and insights
  • Utilize knowledge of experimental design (DOE) and statistics to efficiently select appropriate course(s) of action to meet business needs
  • Utilize available external resources to identify applicable new technologies and recommend bringing those technologies in-house, (e.g. by searching scientific and patent literature, outside contacts, suppliers, etc.)

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE YOU'LL BRING

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or other related science and 5+ years of relevant experience in the consumer products industry, OR Master's degree with 3+ years of relevant work experience
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States

PREFERRED EXPERIENCES AND SKILLS

  • Formulation experience with home fragrance products and/or experience with various products, formulations and delivery system technologies.
  • Experience and understanding of matters related to intellectual property strategy.
  • Robust experience in data analytics, statistical modeling and analysis, and executing 'Design of Experiments' in analysis of large data sets.
  • Knowledge of the product development process.
  • Technical curiosity, innovative, problem solver with ability to effectively influence outcomes and build productive relationships with a wide variety of cross-functional team members regardless of background and position, including senior management.
  • Understanding of the functional properties and the environmental impact of ingredients.
  • Experience in using AI technologies and software.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • This position will be located at our Sam's campus in Mt. Pleasant, WI.
  • Full-Time, Monday-Friday.
  • Lab and office work environments.
  • Remote work available once a week for eligible employees.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • This role is not eligible for relocation.
