Research Associate - Pediatric Surgery (Finance)



Exciting full-time, nonexempt opportunity in our Pediatric Surgery research lab. Work schedule and location: M-F, 8-5 on-site at 6431 Fannin St, Houston 77030.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Manages the day-to-day activities for pediatric neurosurgical research projects of considerable scope and complexity.

POSITION KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Processes and banks cerebrospinal fluid from patient samples from the NICU and ORs

2. Performs basic 2D cell culture and is amenable to learning advanced 3D cell culture

3. Orders lab materials when needed

4. Keeps inventory of all lab supplies and equipment and performs regular maintenance

5. Influences project direction and outcomes by identifying opportunities to enhance, terminate, or re-direct research activities in collaboration with the investigator(s)

6. Helps in the recruiting and documentation of study participants

7. Evaluates and interprets data and provides results to investigators to support publication

8. Maintains quality control checks and a safe environment in compliance with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulations, and codes

9. Assists in the preparation and writing of research reports, manuscripts, papers, and grant proposals for presentation and publication

10. Attends laboratory meetings of affiliated co-investigators

11. Performs other duties as assigned

Position Summary:

Plans, conducts, and directs a wide variety of experiments. Assists with the day-to-day activities for research project(s) and may impact the success of the research project(s).

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Collects, evaluates, interprets, and documents research data to accomplish the objectives of a wide variety of scientific experiments and research projects.
  • Influences project direction and outcomes by identifying opportunities to enhance, terminate, or re-direct research activities.
  • May recruit study participants or field interviewers.
  • Evaluates and interprets data and provides results to investigators to support publication.
  • Maintains quality control checks and a safe environment in compliance with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulation and codes.
  • Assists in the preparation and writing of research reports, manuscripts, papers and grant proposals for presentation and publication.
  • Provides direction and training to lab personnel to ensure efficient, timely and high quality results in compliance with all protocols, guidelines, regulations, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Certification for Protection of Human Research Subject may be required or must be completed within 5 days of employment.

    2D cell culture experience (banking, passaging, feeding, splitting)

    3D cell culture experience optional (handling of pluripotent stem cells, Matrigel embedding of embryoid bodies, feeding of organoids)

    Flow cytometry experience

    Tissue dissociation into a single-cell suspension

    IHC and IF staining

    Upright and inverted microscopy

    Western blotting

    Technical hands-on experience with microsurgery or micromanipulation of tissues and cells

    Bachelor's degree in a related science. Master's or Ph.D. in a research-related field is preferred. 2 years related research or clinical or other experience is preferred.

    Certification/Skills:

    Considerable knowledge in basic and sophisticated equipment.

    Minimum Education:

    Bachelor's degree in a related field with three (3) years of related research experience including experience in a lead research role; or
    Master's degree in a related field with one (1) year of related research experience including experience in a lead research role; or
    Doctorate degree.

    Minimum Experience:

    Years of experience varies based on education level.

    Physical Requirements:

    Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects. This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.
