Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
Senior Editor Technology Policy (Education)
Job Summary
IEEE Spectrum has an exciting opportunity for a full-time editor to cover the tech policy beat. Published by the IEEE, Spectrum is an editorially independent, general-interest publication on technology comprising a monthly print magazine (circulation 500,000) and a website (1 million monthly visitors, spectrum.ieee.org). A successful candidate will have a passion for cutting-edge science and technology and a deep appreciation for how they intersect with government, society, and business. You'll be joining an award-winning team of experienced, collaborative, and dedicated journalists.
One of your main duties will be reporting and writing news stories on tech policy. You'll also solicit opinion pieces and feature articles written by tech policy experts. You'll collaborate with the art team to make your articles visually engaging, and you'll work with the copydesk to ensure your articles are accurate and conform to house style. U.S. and international travel for reporting are required.
In this position, you'll be responsible for Spectrum's coverage of technology and research policy and regulation as it relates to the global engineering community, the tech industry, engineering education and employment, research funding, and new governmental and NGO initiatives in areas where international cooperation is necessary, such as climate change mitigation, telecom and Internet access, electrification, the energy transition, nuclear weapons proliferation, and other topics. You'll have room to maneuver, as well as opportunities to discover and follow leads and developments that intrigue you. We'll count on you to cover tech policy in a way that engages our non-policy-wonk audience. Whatever we cover, we put a lot of weight on great writing about science and technology—unpacking and explaining in clear and friendly language exactly how things work.
The ideal candidate will be based on the U.S. West Coast, but we will consider applicants in other U.S. locations.
The successful candidate will create content for IEEE Spectrum magazine and its website. The Senior Editor for Tech Policy is primarily responsible for news stories on tech policy and expert-authored opinion pieces and feature articles, including commissioning and editing features and working with our art department to make the articles visually engaging.
