Position Summary:Under direct supervision of the Crew Supervisor and the Restoration Program Manager, performsvarious duties to restore native vegetation and manage the riparian and upland habitats on thePueblo of Santa Ana. Removes non-native vegetation, plants and maintains native vegetation,river maintenance and ecological monitoring. Collects data and assists with controlled burns. This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of tasks performed by this position and is not all inclusive.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:• Observes safety rules to ensure and maintain a safe work environment.• Plants seeds and maintains native plants, clears non-native and invasive native vegetationfrom the bosque and applies herbicides as needed.• Assists with data collection in the field including ground water levels, vegetation andwildlife.• Accompanies outside contractors and federal agency representatives on Tribal lands.• Assists with controlled burns to improve the habitat for many wildlife species and managescompeting vegetation.• Operates tractors, mowers, water trucks, excavators, Bobcats and other heavy equipmentas needed.• Checks to ensure tools are in proper working order; reports defects and broken partsfound on equipment.• Assists with community outreach activities including Environmental Fair and communitywood distribution. • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.• Performs other duties as directed.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills and Certifications: • Knowledge of Santa Ana Pueblo traditions, language, history and culture. • Knowledge of proper safety procedures and techniques.• Knowledge of wildlife, habitat, and native and exotic vegetation.• Skill in operating tools, equipment such as hand tools, power tools, chain saw,tractor, trailers, hand-mowers/auger, and 6-wheel ATV.• Ability to swim or feel comfortable in water with a life-preserver vest.• Ability to exercise independent judgment.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.• Ability to follow supervisor's instructions and provide feedback when necessary• Ability to work in the outdoors and inclement weather conditions.• Ability to work independently or with a team. • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.• Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships. • Ability to use GPS unit.
Minimum Qualifications:High School diploma or GED and one year field or outdoor labor experience. Must be ableto successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigationincluding a motor vehicle check. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver'slicense and be insurable under the Pueblo's insurance. May be required to occasionallywork weekends. Certification in Sawyer Training, Wildland Firefighting, CPR and First Aidpreferred.
Physical Demands:While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to stand;walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel,crouch or crawl. The employee regularly is required to climb and balance, talk and hear. The employee may occasionally need to detect odors from plants, animals and othersources. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Work Environment:Work is generally performed outdoors. Individual can expect to work in extremeenvironmental conditions (e.g., winter and summer weather, prescribed fires) withpotential hazards (e.g., rattlesnakes, chainsaws, and heavy equipment). Standing andwalking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground. Situations where safety-toeshoes, safety goggles, gloves, or protective face shields are needed may occur. Travelwithin and outside the Pueblo area is required for completing work orders and working insensitive and/or hazardous areas is common.
