Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Scientist I to join our Specialty Additives business at our Wilmington, DE location. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the R&D function. This position will report to R&D Director for Specialty Additives Wilmington lab.

This entry-level scientist will support research and development activities focused on formulating, testing, and optimizing additives for coatings applications, especially in water-borne architectural and industrial coatings. The role offers hands-on experience in a dynamic lab environment and opportunities to contribute to innovative product development.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Conduct laboratory experiments to evaluate coating additive performance in various formulations.
• Prepare and test coating samples using standard application techniques (e.g., drawdowns, spray, roller).
• Analyze results using techniques such as rheology, gloss, adhesion, and surface characterization.
• Maintain accurate records of experimental procedures, data, and observations.
• Collaborate with senior scientists to support ongoing R&D projects and customer trials.
• Assist in the preparation of technical reports and presentations.
• Ensure compliance with safety protocols and good laboratory practices.
• Actively contribute to the organizational goals by taking initiative, executing on goals and focusing on performance and safety
• Improve the organization capacity and capabilities through building collaborative relationships, optimizing diverse talent and utilizing positive communications and influence with others

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:

• B.S. or M.S. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
• 0-3 years of experience in coatings, polymers, or specialty chemicals (internships or co-ops welcome).
• Basic understanding of coating formulation and additive functionality, in particular water-borne architectural and industrial coatings.
• Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation and data analysis.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
• Demonstrated responsible and ethical behavior at all times
• The ability to help the company drive greater value through understanding the business, making complex decisions and creating the new and different
