Job Description
The Principal Electromechanical Systems Engineer plays a leadership role in defining the Robotic Architecture of the Intuitive Surgical's flagship product, da Vinci Surgical System. This individual will drive decisions on architecture of the robotic system that elevate the standards of safety, performance and customer delight. The individual will have authority and responsibility to collaborate with Product Management, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Software and Firmware Engineers and, Clinical Safety Engineers to compile the architectural description and system level requirements that elevates the state of art in responding to the mission of Intuitive Surgical - improving surgery for Patients and Caregivers.

The individual will be grounded in deep technical expertise in one or more areas of engineering and will be expected to clarify and communicate up to executive leadership the decisions centered around the complex tradeoffs at the intersection of technology, engineering and clinical performance of robotic surgery system.

Essential Job Duties

This position has responsibility and authority to:

  • Develop and maintain Electromechanical interface definition, safety and reliability requirements that are aligned with product strategy, safety, features, interfaces with Instruments and Accessories, performance, cost and reliability. Drive design inputs on reliable interoperation requirements and interfaces - both internal and external.
  • Make major contributions to consistency in risk management in Mechanical and Electrical systems to ensure consistency between top-down risk documents and bottoms up departmental risk documents. Be a safety hawk for the Multiport business unit.
  • Drive the team to meet broad business scalability objectives, contributing to capable NPD product operations at scale
  • Maintain a broad, contemporary knowledge of Mechanical Design, electrical connectivity and computing technologies and collaborate on product architectures that deliver performance, scalability and continuity
  • Develop, maintain, and share with the development team a deep understanding of user needs and business strategy
Qualifications
Required Skill and Experience
  • 15-20 years of direct experience in Mechanical, Electrical, Software or Systems integration as applied to Robotically controlled medical devices or equivalent
  • Strong understanding of Risk Management and Documentation practices for Mechatronic Medical Devices
  • Significant experience at the interface of Mechanical, Electrical, Motion Control, and Software systems for Robotically Assisted Surgical devices
  • Significant understanding of Design inputs and Design Outputs and their place in Product Development Process of Robotic Medical devices
  • Demonstrated ability to guide complex system design for performance and reliability using first principles thinking and a foundational understanding of strength of materials
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills that facilitate robust decisions.
  • Demonstrated passion for product quality and continuous improvements across multiple functions

Required Education
  • Master's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering with 15 years of experience or a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering with 12 years of experience

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The target salary ranges are listed.

Base Salary Range Region 1: $200,400 USD - $300,600 USD
Base Salary Range Region 2: $170,300 USD - $255,500 USD
Shift: Day
Workplace Type: Set Schedule - This job will be onsite weekly, the percentage of onsite work will be defined by the leader. Apply
