Application Developer 2 - College of Optometry (Finance)

Description:

Analyzes, develops and modifies application programs and ad-hoc programs, under moderate supervision. May provide support to enterprise systems.

1. Codes, tests, debugs, modifies and troubleshoots application programs and ad-hoc programs in accordance with shop standards.
2. Analyzes complex application processes and systems and their underlying data structures; identifies and resolves problems.
3. Installs, tests and troubleshoots vendor-supported applications.
4. Assists users with understanding, testing and using applications and programs, which includes running programs for users.
5. Documents data structures, run streams, applications, programs and other objects according to generally accepted practices.
6. Uses non-core technologies to design, code, test, debug, modify and troubleshoot systems, such as voice activated responses, electronic data interchange and web interfaces.
7. Learns new technologies and techniques.
8. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

The vision research program in the College of Optometry is seeking an experienced application developer for its research programming core which is supported by a P30 core grant from the National Eye Institute (NEI). The application developer job includes project management and direct coding, as well as coaching graduate students and research staff on project design, best practices and debugging. The typical purpose of an application is instrumentation control or novel data analysis based on the unique needs of each investigator. The investigators study normal and abnormal visual processes, using a variety of approaches ranging from molecular and cellular, to neurophysiological, behavioral and optical.

Competencies Include:
Robust coding in MATLAB, Python, C#, C++ and the ability to pivot to other languages
Developing documents that articulate software requirements for scientific users
Adherence to and promotion of best practices regarding source code control and maintenance
Distributing efforts equitably among 15 or more faculty while maintaining priorities for project funding
Maintaining records of project effort for administrative reporting
Advising investigators on management of data

The ideal candidate for this position will possess:
Perspectives from software development, engineering, math, and science
Experience with signal processing, image processing, computer vision and graphics
Clear and engaging communication skills with users, developers and stakeholders
Commitment to improving users' workflows to enhance throughput and scientific rigor.

Experience will be considered in lieu of education.

MQ: Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Requires a minimum of one (1) year of directly job-related experience.
