Senior Staff Bioinformatic Scientist

Introduction

Illumina Laboratory Services (ILS) is seeking to hire an experienced, enthusiastic and highly numerate Senior Staff Bioinformatics Scientist based in Foster City or San Diego, CA. ILS is at the forefront of all research and clinical sequencing and genotyping applications that leverage Illumina technologies and platforms. Therefore, members of the ILS bioinformatics team will be responsible for the analysis of omics, cancer, reproductive and genetic health, and genotypic data. The goals of the team are to engage with internal and external collaborators, to improve current on-market solutions by driving data insights from data, and to translate the challenges faced by the group into bioinformatics solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Statistical analysis, machine learning and bioinformatics algorithms to support projects and applications of Illumina technologies.
  • Research, development and analysis of datasets that span multiomics.
  • Technical lead in core teams of ILS projects that drive new adoption of emerging Illumina technologies.
  • Mentor Bioinformatic Scientists and Bioinformatic Engineers on technical and project management while coaching team members on development areas including problem solving.
  • Develop novel and optimize bioinformatic tools and algorithms to improve product performance, patient outcomes, and internal/external partner's needs.
  • Work collaboratively with KOLs, bioinformaticians, research and development scientists and engineers for various projects.
  • Regular communication of analysis results and other findings to a cross-functional team.
  • Produce documentation of data analyses (e.g. R Markdowns/Jupyter Notebooks), custom software tools or software development activities.

Requirements:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 9 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 6 years experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Must have minimum 2-5+ years of experience in a similar Senior Staff level position including general experience in Life Sciences, Genomics or Pharmaceutical industries.
  • Experience with statistical and mathematical modelling of genomic, proteomic, and transcriptomic data; machine learning techniques, Bayesian statistics and multivariate analysis are a plus.
  • Strong data analysis skills using R, Python, or other modern data analysis languages.
  • Knowledge of current bioinformatics resources and tools for secondary and tertiary analysis of multiomic data in fields of oncology and genetic diseases.
  • Strong programming and scripting; demonstrate ability to write readable, well-documented and unit-tested code.
  • Must be independent and strategically minded while showing technical leadership skills and experience.
  • Must have proficient written, communication and presentation skills with the ability to present to both scientific and corporate audiences.

The estimated base salary range for the Senior Staff Bioinformatic Scientist role based in the United States of America is: $192,200 - $288,200. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
