Surgical Technician Per Diem - GI Services Department (Finance)
The Surgical Technician will assist physicians with GI procedures in the GI Lab and Operating Room, support Registered Nurses (RNs) with patient transport and positioning, and work closely with the care team to prepare for interventional procedures. This role involves performing technical endoscopic tasks, cleaning and disinfecting GI scopes according to manufacturer's instructions for use (IFU), and ensuring procedure rooms are restocked and ready. The technician will also follow infection control and safety standards while maintaining accurate documentation.
The Surgical Technician - Per Diem reports to a registered nurse during their scrub role and are under the direction of a Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager or charge nurse depending on their shift of assignment. Surgical Technician - Per Diem positions are unique to the Operating Room of the Riverside University Health System-Medical Center and are characterized by the responsibility for performing the scrub role in a patient's surgical intervention and for administering nursing care to designated patients under the care and supervision of a registered nurse.
Preferred Qualifications:
Per Diem personnel are distinguished from regular employees in that they receive additional compensation in lieu of County fringe benefits and work assignments may be on a flexible work hour schedule.
Per Diem Benefits and Rates:
• Check placement and operation of equipment; check and restock operating room.
• During surgical procedures, incumbents may be responsible for special trays, grafting materials and recording of patient data.
• Check schedule for times and types of operations.
• Verify patient's identity when applicable; check for the presence of bridgework, contact lenses, prosthesis, implants, and personal items (i.e., clothing, jewelry).
• Verify any patient allergies, NPO status and whether patient has voided (when applicable).
• Assemble necessary supplies, instruments and equipment for surgical intervention; conduct equipment checks and labeling and report any malfunctioning to the Nurse Manager or Assistant Nurse Manager.
• Monitor and apply aseptic technique throughout the intraoperative period; closely monitor the operative field and report any breaks immediately.Education: Successful completion of a Surgical Technician Program (verification of completion must be submitted at the time of application and/or interview). Certification as a Surgical Technician is desired but not required.
Knowledge of: Medical terminology; aseptic techniques required in a surgical setting; supplies, instruments and equipment used in surgical interventions; proper patient preparation procedures; medical and patient safety needs.
Ability to: Understand principles of proper body alignment and assure their application during procedures; assist the registered nurse and physician in carrying out surgical intervention; meet patient's physical and psychological needs; properly assemble and care for instrument trays and other equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with nursing, medical staff and others.
Other Requirements:
Certification as a Surgical Technician is desired, but not required.
Possession of a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association for professional healthcare providers.
