Research Scientist (Finance)



The Cook Laboratory in the Molecular Medicine department is recruiting 2 Research Scientists to join a newly established research team at USF in Tampa. The Cook lab uses a variety of cell and animal model systems to provide new insight into pathogenic mechanisms in Alzheimer's disease and related disorders and uncover novel therapeutic strategies. For the current positions available, previous experience with either cell culture methods or histological techniques would be beneficial.Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a natural, physical or medical science.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with histological techniques and sectioning methods.
  • Expertise with cell culture methods and sterile technique.
  • Excellent organizational, record-keeping, and time-management skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office suite and strong communication skills.

The positions available will involve managing lab histological needs (cataloging tissue samples and sections, coordinating tissue embedding, sectioning samples, and staining using DAB or immunofluorescence), or cell culture space (coordinating with other lab members to maintain iPSC and other cell lines, stocking supplies and managing decontamination, viral generation and purification). Work requires practical and basic theoretical knowledge to perform these techniques and to modify them as needed, in consultation with the principal investigator. Competency in standard methods of analysis of the results is expected.

Potential Job Duties/Areas of Responsibilities

  • Performs tissue sectioning
  • Catalogs tissue samples and slides
  • Performs staining using immunohistochemistry or immunofluorescence
  • Maintains cell lines, including iPSCs
  • Generates and purifies virus
  • Manages cell culture space
  • Performs assays for protein or RNA
  • Provides data or figures of publication quality for manuscripts or grants
