Afterschool DJ & Music Production Advisor Lead (Education)

Partnerships to Uplift Communities (PUC) Schools are comprised of a non-profit network of public charter schools designed to significantly increase high school graduation rates, college entrance, and college graduation rates for underserved students in North-East Los Angeles and the North-East San Fernando Valley.

Our mission at PUC Schools is to develop and manage high-quality charter schools in densely populated urban communities with overcrowded and low-achieving schools. The Team Member we are searching for

The ideal Afterschool DJ & Music Production Advisor Lead believes in and is passionate about the mission and commitments of PUC Schools and exhibits this through their leadership, reflection, execution of school culture, and collaboration to ensure student success. The Afterschool DJ & Music Production Advisor Lead inspires creativity, confidence, and collaboration by teaching students the art of DJing and music production in a dynamic afterschool setting.

What you will need to accomplish:

Instruction & Planning

  • Teach students the fundamentals of DJing, beat-matching, scratching, and music production using industry software (e.g., Serato, FL Studio, GarageBand)
  • Introducing the key concepts such as rhythm, tempo, layering, and music composition, incorporating lessons on music history and the diverse cultural roots of DJing through culturally responsive practices that honor all musical traditions
  • Guide students in safely setting up, using, and caring for DJ and sound equipment, and teach principles of music copyright, sampling, and ethics in production
  • Plan engaging lessons that build toward culminating projects or performances where students can display their skills, and connect them with guest DJs or community music opportunities
  • Prepare lesson plans or project outlines for substitute coverage as needed, and collaborate with the Assistant Principal and Principal to ensure alignment with the school's mission, values, and student achievement goals

  • Build strong, positive relationships with students that foster confidence, teamwork, and artistic risk-taking, using positive behavior supports, restorative practices, and conflict resolution strategies to cultivate mutual respect and community
  • Communicate effectively and consistently with all stakeholders—including students, families, staff, and community partners—and keep families informed about student participation, progress, and upcoming performances or events
  • Demonstrate alignment with and support for the school's vision, mission, and commitment to the arts

Professional Growth & Leadership

  • Continuously build knowledge of music production, DJ technology, and performance techniques to bring innovative practices into the club
  • Attend professional development sessions and apply new learning to enrich the program
  • Participate in school-based meetings and events as requested, contributing to a positive and collaborative school culture

What do we require from you?

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Enrolled in college or hold a BA/BS degree is preferred

Experience:

  • Demonstrated expertise in DJing and music production, with strong skills in selecting, mixing, and transitioning between songs across a wide range of styles and genres
  • Solid understanding of DJ techniques, equipment, and music software
  • Subject matter competency paired with practical experience teaching or leading music activities
  • Experience working with youth in afterschool programs, camps, schools, or community settings is highly desirable

Skills & Abilities

  • Proficiency with music production software and equipment (e.g., Serato, Ableton, GarageBand, FL Studio)
  • Knowledge of diverse musical styles, cultures, and histories, with sensitivity to differences in ability
  • Proactively implement positive behavior supports, restorative practices, and conflict resolution strategies to foster mutual respect and community within the club
  • Effective communication skills to explain music concepts, creative techniques, and equipment use
  • Talent for building supportive relationships that inspire creativity, teamwork, and confidence
  • Ability to establish clear expectations, routines, and a positive, engaging learning environment
  • Demonstrates PUC's core values: pursuit of excellence, innovation, community, tenacity, and authenticity
  • Organized, adaptable, and able to problem-solve in a dynamic afterschool setting
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred but not required
  • Regular attendance, punctuality, and accountability are essential

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Occasionally required to kneel, climb, and reach with hands and arms above shoulder level, lift up to 30 pounds. To bend, sit, stand, squat, stoop, walk, push, pull, and reach with hands and arms at shoulder level or below. Always required to wear the appropriate safety equipment for the task, which may include gloves, goggles, aprons, belts, etc.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • This is a part-time, hourly position
