Academic Advisor I (Finance)



This position will report to the Director of Student Academic Services. This is a professional non-instructional advising position supporting Student Academic Services, a central advising office in the College of Education on USF's Tampa campus. This position requires considerable contact with students through individual appointments, group sessions, orientations, Teams meetings, and email. Student interactions require demonstrated communication and relationship building skills as well as an understanding of student development and the institution's organizational structure/functions. Academic Advisors are expected to possess extensive knowledge of state, university, and college policies, academic curriculum and programs, student engagement opportunities, campus resources, and student development and learning within the scope of their responsibilities.This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling or academic field directly related to the Advisor's specific responsibilities with a minimum of one year of experience in advising or related academic functions within higher education. Work experience may not be substituted for the Bachelor's degree requirement for this position.

  • Recruitment- represent the college/programs at recruitment events such as high school clubs, state/community college classes, and transfer fairs.
  • Admission and Orientation- guide students through transition periods, facilitate new student orientations, prepare students for admission to the college/program.
  • Advising- demonstrate knowledge of academic policy, procedures, and curriculum, support course selection, provide collaborative academic planning, explore majors, investigate major to career connections, develop student's ability to think critically, problem solve, and make meaning from their college experience, record advising interactions, maintain confidentiality standards, engage in training and professional development opportunities, utilize technology for effective advising, analyze and report on student data.
  • Progression- create referrals to academic services/resources, track and monitor progression toward degree, participate in retention and academic progress rate activities, conduct proactive outreach to at-risk students, problem solve issues impacting registration.
  • Graduation- review student records and certify degrees, model appropriate professional expectations, access college to career/graduate school resources for students.
  • Engagement- identify cocurricular opportunities that align with the student's area of interest or need.
