Summary/objective
A Heavy Equipment Road Operator operates a variety of equipment and machines with attachments to move timber, forest or construction products. A Heavy Equipment Road Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy machinery to construct, maintain, and repair roads and related infrastructure. They work on projects like road building, bridge construction, and other infrastructure development, often under various weather conditions.
Essential Functions:
Performs Heavy Equipment Operation for Road Construction.
Have good judgement regarding site, terrain, and weather conditions for safe equipment operation.
Other tasks may include assisting with other operations at the job site such as maintenance of other equipment.
Maneuvering and controlling various types of heavy machinery, including bulldozers, graders, loaders, backhoes, and excavators, among others.
Performing tasks such as grading, excavating, and patching roads, as well as installing culverts and guardrails.
Must have substantial mechanical intelligence and experience trouble shooting and repairing small engines, heavy equipment maintenance and/or vehicle maintenance including.
Perform multiple inspections throughout the day on equipment to check and maintain proper fluid levels, performance of the equipment, etc., using the company checklist as a guideline.
Reports equipment needs and hazards to supervisor.
Continuously conduct safety checks on the equipment (seat belt, fire extinguisher, lights, etc.) to ensure equipment is working properly and safely.
Survey, evaluate and take measures to ensure work area is safe from any dangers (powerlines, utilities, co-workers, etc.)
Inspect all attachments to the machinery to ensure that they are operational and take the appropriate steps to correct.
Follow work order instructions from the supervisor.
Ensures that the job site is left in safe condition.
Maintains good housekeeping on equipment.
Operates a chainsaw when needed.
Travel and work overtime when required.
Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:
All work is performed outside in all types of various weather (i.e. heat, cold, wind, sun and inclement weather, etc.).

Physical Demands - The physical demands below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
Must have good visual and auditory physical capabilities in order to manage sight and sounds in a hazardous construction environment.
Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Coordination between hands, eyes, feet to guide equipment and objects is required.
Must be able to push and pull with hands, arms, and feet repetitively.
Must be able to push, pull, climb, sit, and stretch regularly while performing the essential functions of the job.
Must be able to be alert and cognitive of multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including awareness of other employees, subcontractors, machinery, equipment, and moving traffic when applicable.
Must be able to work around loud noises.
Must be able to mount and dismount safely off vehicles and equipment.
Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
Must be able to work overtime as requested.
Must be able to walk on uneven terrain.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Travel Required:
Position travels outside the local area but usually within Northern California, 40% to 50%.
Required Education and Experience:
2-5 years' experience in road construction.
Preferred Education and Experience:
High School education or equivalent (Preferred).

Forestry: 1 year (Preferred).
Heavy equipment operator: 2 years (Preferred).
Mechanical Knowledge: 1 year (Preferred).
Additional Eligibility Requirements:
Must have a valid driver's license.
Clean Driving Record: 5 years (Required).
Must pass pre-employment drug screen.
